The Scottish Midge is the terror of the Islands. A tiny insect less than 2mm long it is quite capable of spoiling a pleasant day out with its high pitched whining attack followed by the big, red and itchy lumps for anyone at al sensitive to them.

September tends to be the end of the midgy season but there is a good chance that there will still be enough around to be a pest. What can you do? Wear light coloured clothes, leave as little bare flesh as possible, pray for a breeze, they can’t fly in wind speeds over 6 mph (about 8 kph). If you react really badly a full head net can be bought at most good angling shops.

Finally any DEET based repellent is fairly effective though the best I have found so far is the Avon "Skin-so-soft" range of cosmetics, I have the “Moisturising Dry Oil Body Spray”. It’s pure dead brilliant I kid you not. And of course has the side effect of leaving you with wonderful soft skin.

A really nice article on the midge.

A learned and detailed document on the midge.
