Islay Fishing Lochs
Loch Ballygrant
SummaryLoch Finlaggan

The Scottish Midge driving on single track roads

Sunday 6 April 2003 A week or so ago I got an email from the organisers of the European Fly Fishing Championships asking for links to their site.

This should be a major event in the Islay year and I thought it would be good to start a series of pages dedicated to locations that they will use. This page is the first at Loch Ballygrant. Loch Ballygrant is a very attractive site and a pleasant walk with my two youngest brought in some nice pictures. Above there is the entire loch, of course it will open up to the full-sized image if you click on it.

The picture on the right is the gates into the loch.

The level of the loch is controlled with a sluice at the outflow to the southern end of the loch. A small bridge crosses the outflow here. A gravel road runs over right up the western side of the loch.

Beaches of small stones run along the edges of most of the loch. Over large areas of the perimeter the vegetation overhangs the side of the loch giving shade and cover.

The water here is clear unlike the peaty waters of the other lochs. On the far shore are some extensive reed beds.

Dunlossit estate have already started work on the event, a new jetty has been built and a new surface has been put down on the approach. A small boat was pulled up and in the distance you can see two of the islands in the loch.

There are several islands in the lake and these are well covered with vegetation.

At the north end of the loch is a long reach of stone beach, the water is shallow for several metres out but then seems to shelve down steeply.

The estate have been busy clearing a lot of the older trees to open up the view and make some of the areas more accessible. It all looks very good.
