Port Ellen is the busy port town on the south of the Island. The morning ferry docks here as do many fishing boats and grain boats. There is a busy Co-op and several other small shops selling a range of goods. In size it is roughly the same as Bowmore. The picture shows the Caledonian MacBrayne pier with several fishing boats tied up. The picture below looks across the bay towards the village. There is a pleasant sandy beach around the bay and the superb Kilnaughton beach is a short(ish) walk away. The walk takes you past the now closed Port Ellen whisky buildings and the large Maltings where the grain is malted for many of the island’s distilleries. There are safe tie-ups in the bay for visiting yachts well away from the ferry. Horse riding and trekking are available nearby.

Port Ellen is a small village. It has beautiful beaches. There are the playing fields were you can play golf, putting, tennis or badminton and there is a little shop up there. There are a variety of shops in Port Ellen such as a pottery shop, Co-op, Torrie’s (where you can buy lots of different things), Snipshape (the craft shop) and many others. The hotel in Port Ellen is the White Hart (recently renovated and reopened under new management).

The Cyber Cafe is a great place to stop for a snack or a catch up on your e-mail. Petrol is available in Port Ellen on the road out to Bowmore.
