The journey takes around two hours and fifteen minutes, as you approach Port Ellen there are three distilleries visible on the south coast being from right to left Ardbeg, Lagavulin and Laphroaig. The picture below is of Laphroaig.

Immediately after Laphroaig the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry, usually the ‘Hebridean Isles’, turns into the small harbour of Port Ellen. Looking across the bows we can see the jetty and the house along the front. In about fifteen minutes the ferry will dock and we will be home.

On a stormy day the tie up can be entertaining, the ferry has to reverse into the jetty so vehicles can leave via the stern ramp. Time to remember which side of the vehicle deck your car is at. The Master will call over the tannoy when it is time to occupy your vehicle so – relax.
