The Ardnave Peninsula and Kilnave Cross and Chapel

On the northern coast of the island to the west of the great bay of Gruniard the Ardnave peninsula makes a wonderful walk. Drive to the RSPB reserve and at the centre there take the small road heading north. As you drive up the tiny, single-track road you will see the ruined chapel of Kilnave to your right about 50 metres along an unmarked track. Leave your car in the passing place and walk down. Be sure to keep the churchyard gate closed or cows will get in and turn over the gravestones. The cross is very weathered, its strange shape being due to the loss of part of both of the arms.

Driving down a little further to the lake with the crannog we parked the car (see map). Jenn and I walked up the track and down onto the beach, a longer walk took us a couple of miles around the peninsula and back to the farm from the other direction. The farmer, Mr Epps, kindly does not object to considerate(!) walkers passing through the yard to complete their walk.
