The Big Strand is a six mile long beach stretching from mouth of the river Laggan south to the farm and restaurant at Kintra. There are three points of access, at the Kintra end you can park at the far and get to the southern end of the beach. Just to the north of the airport is an old road now derelict which leads down to the middle of the beach and at Island farm just before the bridge over the laggan is a signposted road which takes you through two gates to get to the beach, please remember to close them after you!

The pictures below are taken at this point. The road is very potholed and so beware of your suspension as you travel along here. For those unused to driving on sand it might be better to park just before the second gate and walk the short distance over the machair to the beach. This is one of the beaches where it is reasonably safe to bathe, the beaches on the more exposed coast suffer from powerful currents and are definitely not safe.

I am indebted to my friend Susan from Vermont for these images. Clicking on them will bring up the full-sized image.

Looking out to Lochindaal from the top of the dune, you can see the tracks of the vehicles where a builder has removed sand. Looking south, sometime builders remove sand from this beach leaving big holes for kids to play in. On the Machair above the strand, I'm looking down on the sand.
Looking north along the sweep of the bay. erm … the sand just on the shoreline.
