The Singing Sands near Port Ellen Along the road from Port Ellen and clearly visible from the ferry is the attractive beach known as the singing sands. The wild summer day in 2002 when I was there with the camera the weather was really quite wild but even so the sands were looking good. The nearby farm and lighthouse of Carraig Fhada where a local artist has a studio and workshop The path over to the singing sands is well marked see map below.

The white sand is studded with rocks for climbing and scrambling. The beach is a good place to search for blue rayed limpets too. From the other end of the beach you look back towards the lighthouse of Carraig Fhada . Built in 1832 it commemorated Lady Ellinor Campbell after whom Port Ellen is named. On this windy day the waves beat against the rocks and the water looks very uninviting for bathing!.
Above the farm sheep rest and try to keep a dry spot. And on the rocks if you are lucky an occasional seal keeps its belly dry on the rocks. A map to get you there
