Loch Lomond

Glasgow Road to Islay   Luss

The road along these banks is one of the most beautiful in Scotland in my opinion. The Loch is covered in small islands at the shallow south end and narrows to a deep, dark and cold brooding at the north end.

The road is a 60 mph limit and in my opinion as a boring person is just about right. The road meanders along the contour and there are few places where overtaking is really safe, this can be frustrating when stuck behind a caravan, but be careful. Likewise this is a road well traveled by packs of bambies (born again middle aged bikers) who redefine "speed limit" to "speed minimum". Watch out for them they can be real hazards.

There are many stopping places along its length and it pays an occasional photo opportunity along its length. One of the islands along the way you will see is covered with dark and distinctive yew trees. This is Inchlonaig and legend has it the trees were planted by Bonnie Prince Charlie to get yew wood for his bowmen after the impressive showing of the English bowmen.

Well signposted along the way is the conservation village of Luss, site of the famous "High Road" soap. The village is worth a stop and an explore down to the pier for some fantastic views of the loch. The quaintly named "Glendarroch tea rooms" is best avoided unless you like motorway service stations, a wonderful opportunity spoiled by plastic and tourist tat. In the village are much better opportunities for coffee and a break.

Towering over the whole loch is the Monroe known as Ben Lomond (3194 feet). A magnificent mountain and one of the most often walked in Scotland. Not a very challenging climb in terms of difficulty but it is a long walk up from Rowardennan on the far side of the Loch. If you want to try it you most definitely a day to spare and you need good boots and waterproofs as the weather can change suddenly. Singing the "On yon bonnie banks" song is compulsory and there are regular police song checks along the way with instant fines if you cannot sing it :~)
