The Harbour Inn is in the old square in the village of Bowmore. The food here is excellent. Scott Chance has now moved on to other but the tradition of good service is continuing. See their web site for more information. With a nice bar and excellent views this is a good place to visit. There is also a pleasant coffee lounge newly built at the side overlooking the harbour. |
The
Port Charlotte Hotel
tel +44 (0)1496 850360 The ten bedroom, 4 star hotel has good sea views located and is in the middle of the historic and attractive conservation village on the west shore of Loch Indaal. The informal restaurant specialises in local seafood, beef and lamb. I’ve had one of the best meals in my life there recently. For more see the The Port Charlotte Hotel website or E-mail the Port Charlotte Hotel. The previous owner of the Hotel (Carl Reavey) has provided some excellent pictures of the area for which I’m indebted. I’ve presented these as thumbnails to the right – a click on any one will bring up the full-sized image. |
The Bridgend Hotel
is in an attractive woodland setting and has a very friendly atmosphere. See their page here for more information. There is extensive coverage of the area around bridgend now on these pages of the site: |
Port Askaig this attractive hotel is directly on the pier at Port Askaig. The cosy bar and small dining room take you back to an earlier and more relaxed age. In front there is a pleasant picnic area overlooking the sound of Islay and the magnificent Paps of Jura. The food there is basic but good and the atmosphere is excellent. I have not been in the rooms there and I do not know anyone who has so if you have some comment I would like to know. See their website. |
Kintra The farmhouse at the end of the Kintra road has been converted into a hotel and bunkhouse. It is also the only serviced camp site on the island for caravans and tents. It sits at the end of a six mile beach. See Kintra Hotel. Hotels websites or phone numbers all numbers are prefixed with 01496 Calling from overseas dial your international dialling code then 44 and omit the leading 0 – so calling the Harbour Inn from the USA becomes 011 44 1496 810330
